Connecticut winters are tough on concrete, and the garage floor sees the worst of it. National Weather Service climate normals for 1991 to 2020 put Hartford’s typical snowfall at about 52 inches a year, with roughly 126 days when the overnight low reaches freezing or colder. To keep highways passable, CTDOT treats roads with chloride based salts and salt brine, sometimes up to three days before a storm arrives.
Every drive home carries some of that salty slush onto the slab, where it melts, soaks in and can freeze again. University of Maryland Extension warns that overusing deicers can speed up the freeze and thaw cycles that damage concrete. A coated floor gives salt and meltwater a sealed surface to sit on, one that rinses clean, and half of the companies below list basement floors among their specialties.

What Hartford Homeowners Ask Before Coating a Floor
Can a garage floor be coated during a Connecticut winter?
Often, yes, as long as the space can be kept within the temperature range the product calls for. Cold slows curing and some coatings have a minimum slab temperature, so many installers either heat the garage or steer bookings toward spring through fall. Ask how a company handles cold weather jobs and whether winter changes the timeline.
Will road salt hurt my garage coating?
A sound coating generally stands up to salty slush much better than bare concrete, because the salt sits on the surface instead of soaking in. It still pays to clear out puddles and rinse the floor now and then during the winter. Your installer’s care sheet is the best guide, since cleaners and products differ.
Is epoxy a good choice for a basement floor?
It often is, but moisture is the big question below grade. Water vapor coming up through a basement slab can weaken a coating’s bond, which is why a moisture test before the job is common, sometimes followed by a moisture barrier primer. Ask what testing they do and what the warranty says about moisture.
What can a coating do for an old slab with cracks and pitting?
Prep work usually takes care of a lot: grinding opens up the surface, and cracks and pits are filled before the coating goes down. Severe damage can need more repair first. Ask which repairs the quote includes and how the finished floor will look over patched areas.
How much time should I set aside for the project?
Many garages take one or two days of work, then some cure time before the car goes back in. Larger spaces, basement moisture steps and cold weather can stretch that. Get the full schedule in writing with your quote, including the point when foot traffic is fine and the day the car can come back in.
