A chemical resistant coating is a floor coating, typically epoxy, novolac epoxy, or polyurea, formulated to withstand exposure to acids, solvents, cleaners, or other harsh chemicals without breaking down.
Understanding Chemical Resistant Coatings
Not all epoxies or coatings handle chemical exposure the same way. Standard epoxy resins can hold up to mild cleaners and occasional spills, but environments with regular exposure to acids, caustics, or solvents need a specialized formulation, often a novolac epoxy or a polyurea and polyaspartic blend, engineered specifically for that resistance.
What Determines a Coating’s Chemical Resistance?
The resin chemistry is the main driver. Novolac epoxies cross-link more densely than standard epoxies, which closes off the microscopic pathways that chemicals use to penetrate the film. Cure time and film thickness matter too, since an undercured or thin coating will resist chemicals far less effectively than a fully cured system applied at the manufacturer’s recommended mil thickness.
Chemical Resistant Coating vs. Standard Epoxy Coating
A standard epoxy coating is built for durability and appearance in general commercial or residential settings, and it can handle light, occasional chemical contact. A chemical resistant coating is built specifically to be submerged in or regularly exposed to aggressive chemicals, such as in a food processing plant, a battery room, or a chemical storage area, and it typically costs more due to the specialized resin.
Practical Tips for Specifying a Chemical Resistant Coating
Give the coating manufacturer a full list of the chemicals the floor will be exposed to, including concentration and frequency, since resistance varies significantly by chemical type. Ask for the manufacturer’s chemical resistance chart for the specific product being quoted rather than relying on general marketing claims. Plan for proper containment and cove base details at the walls, since chemical spills that reach an unprotected wall-floor joint can undermine the whole system.
