A traffic coating is a liquid-applied waterproof wearing surface for decks, balconies, ramps, and parking structures that handles foot and vehicle traffic.
Understanding Traffic Coatings
A traffic coating is a multi-layer system applied over concrete or similar surfaces to waterproof them while still taking daily wear. Common jobs include parking decks, balconies, walkways, stadium concourses, and ramps. Flexibility is the key feature, since decks move and crack with temperature changes and loading.
Typical Layers in a Traffic Coating System
Most systems start with a primer to bond to the slab, then a flexible waterproofing membrane, often urethane or polyurea based. Aggregate is broadcast into the membrane for traction, and a topcoat locks it in and adds UV and abrasion resistance. Pedestrian systems are usually thinner. Vehicular systems are built thicker to handle turning tires and braking.
Where Traffic Coatings Fail
Most failures start at the details, not the open field of the deck. Cracks, joints, drains, and wall transitions need proper prep, flashing, and reinforcement before the main membrane goes down. Applying over a damp slab or skipping crack treatment leads to blisters and leaks.
Practical Tips for Applicators
Test the slab for moisture, treat every crack and joint, and follow the data sheet for mil thickness at each layer. Keep drains clear and the surface sloped so water does not pond. Take photos of each layer as you go so you have a record for the warranty file.
