Lithium silicate densifier is a liquid hardener that soaks into concrete and reacts to make the surface denser, harder, and more resistant to dusting and abrasion.
Understanding Lithium Silicate Densifiers
Lithium silicate reacts with free calcium in concrete to form a hard, glass-like compound inside the pores. The result is a tougher surface that dusts less and takes a polish better. Compared to sodium and potassium silicates, lithium products are less likely to leave a white residue and can be applied with less risk.
Why Contractors Use Lithium Silicate
It is forgiving and quick. Most products are sprayed on, worked in with a microfiber pad, and left to dry. Many are used as part of a polishing schedule between grit steps. They also help with dust control in warehouses and shops where bare concrete takes a beating.
Common Problems
Over-application is the biggest issue. If the product is left puddled and not worked in, it can dry as a white film that is hard to remove. Slabs that are very dense or have a curing compound on them may not accept densifier at all, so always test a small area first.
Practical Tips for Applicators
Spray in even passes, keep the surface wet for the time stated on the data sheet, and remove any excess before it dries. Make sure the slab is clean and open before you apply, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on timing relative to your grit steps.
