Basement waterproofing is the set of products and methods used to keep water and moisture out of basement walls and floors, both inside and out.
Understanding Basement Waterproofing
Basement waterproofing covers three main approaches. Exterior waterproofing keeps water off the foundation wall. Interior waterproofing uses coatings, sealers, or membranes on the inside surface. Drainage systems such as sump pumps and interior drains move water out. Many jobs need more than one.
Coatings vs. Drainage
A cementitious or crystalline coating can slow moisture that seeps through walls and floors. It will not stop a serious water problem caused by high groundwater or poor drainage outside. If water is under hydrostatic pressure, a coating alone is rarely the right fix.
Know the Source First
Before you quote, find out where the water comes from. Gutters, grading, cracks, window wells, and high water tables all cause leaks and each has a different fix. Moisture testing and a good look outside save you from guessing.
Practical Tips for Contractors
Clean and open the surface, repair cracks and cold joints, and follow the data sheet for mixing and curing. Be honest with customers about what a coating can and cannot do, and put those limits in writing.
