Understanding Water-Based Epoxy
Water-based epoxy still uses a resin and hardener like any other epoxy system, but the resin is dispersed in water rather than a solvent or used at 100% solids. This makes it lower in VOCs and much easier to clean up with soap and water while the material is still wet, which is why it is popular for interior spaces where fumes are a concern.
What Affects How Water-Based Epoxy Performs?
Because it contains water, the coating builds a thinner dry film per coat than a 100% solids epoxy, since some of the volume evaporates as it cures. It also tends to have a longer cure time in cool or humid conditions, since the water needs to evaporate before the coating can fully harden. Most water-based systems need more coats to reach the same film build as a solvent-free product.
Water-Based Epoxy vs. 100% Solids Epoxy
100% solids epoxy contains no water or solvent, so nearly the entire can ends up on the floor, building a thick, durable film in fewer coats but with a shorter pot life and stronger odor during application. Water-based epoxy is thinner per coat, lower odor, and more forgiving to apply, but generally needs more coats and offers less chemical and abrasion resistance than a 100% solids system.
Practical Tips for Using Water-Based Epoxy
Do not apply it too thick in a single coat expecting solvent-based results, since water-based products are designed to be built up in thinner layers. Keep the space ventilated and within the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity range, since poor evaporation conditions can slow the cure or cause a hazy finish. Use it where low odor matters most, such as occupied homes or schools, and reserve 100% solids products for garages and industrial spaces where a thicker, more chemical resistant film is the priority.
